If you are choosing to feed garden birds this Christmas then you need to be careful how you feed them. Many animals are out at this time of year trying to scavenge. This means rats, mice, and other vermin will be reaching around your bins and gardens already. So there is no need to encourage them.

Putting food on the floor can be good for robins; there are a lot of lovely and pretty birds that will also dine from the floor along with the robin. However, along with these endangered and beautiful creatures, there are many scum creatures that will come along and snack on your floor feast as well. But there are ways to stop this from happening. Foxes are most likely to get themselves out at night, especially around people and homes. This means you need to go outside before the night falls, and check that all the food you put down has been eaten. If it hasn't, do not just leave it. This will need cleaning away and putting in a bin- make sure this is a bin that foxes cannot get to.

Rotting food is unsightly, so be sure to check all your bird feeders regularly, especially in the winter months. Damp can rot the food quicker, and the water and moisture in the air can make it so that the food you have put out spoils quicker than it would in the summer. This means it is necessary to keep a close eye on all feeders. Most hanging feeders are okay and will last a while, but the others certainly need looking at.

Keeping a bag of fresh bird food in your garage or shed is easy enough to do. However you must make sure that your shed and garage are impenetrable by other animals. If you do not, you could find a family of mice or rats setting up camp in your garage and maybe even choosing to hibernate until the warmer weather comes back.

For birds to be safe they need to be away from predators and have a good source of food and water. Food is cheap to buy and birds don't eat that much so filling up a feeder every now and then is no trouble. A bird bath is easy to maintain and keep clean so that birds can always have fresh and healthy water to drink and use to keep their feathers clean of grease and parasites.
