The .CO domain registry .CO Internet has launched a new membership program that gives startups a whole range of benefits designed to help grow their business. The program, i.go.co launched on Thursday, is part referral, part rewards, and is free to join.

The perks of the program include free passes to Startup Weekend events worldwide, free tickets to education events and conferences, free access to co-working spaces, free SEO consultations, and discounts on General Assembly courses. Eventually, members will be able to offer the community their own benefits.

The referral portion of the program pays members $5 for each friend they get to register a .co domain. Members refer friends to the i.go.co domain, which refers them to various domain registrars. DomainNameWire says this is the first domain registry to offer its own affiliate program.

.CO Internet has targeted startups since its launch two years ago, and has partnered with many startup programs to offer entrepreneurs free .CO domains including Startup America, and Startup Weekend. Some startup organizations, including StartUp Britain, have rebranded their website to .CO domains.

Recently, Sedo launched its Q3 Domain Market Study, which found the .co domain in the top ten TLDs sold in Q3 2012 through its marketplace. .CO was the ninth most frequently sold TLD at Sedo last year, Sedo says.

Web hosts that offer .co domain registration could promote the membership program in their own marketing effort, particularly those already targeting startups in their marketing campaigns. Last week, web hosting provider Atlantic.Net sponsored a Startup Weekend in Orlando.

To sign up, members enter their email address and existing .co domain name. If they don?t have a .co domain, they can register through the i.go.co site.

The membership program is in beta, and is available to the first 1,000 .CO users to sign up.

.CO Internet plans to officially launch the program before SXSW in Austin this March, which explains the startup angle. The interaction portion of the festival includes the SXSW Accelerator, startup-related panels, networking events, pitch events and mentoring/coaching sessions.

?While we?re definitely excited by our fast growth, we?re not here to build ?just another domain extension,?? Juan Diego Calle, founder and CEO of .CO said in a statement. ?We?re here to support the thriving community of innovators, entrepreneurs, startups, developers, investors, marketers and big dreamers who are building the world?s next great businesses and brands on .CO with the fuel they need to take action on their plans ? and to succeed.?

Talk back: As a startup, would you be interested in the .co domain membership program? Do you think the availability of the .CO Internet membership program could help sell .co domains? Let us know in a comment.
