Capital One survey: Texas consumer and business attitudes about ...

Attitudes about Texas? economic and employment climate improved in the third quarter, but business and personal finances remain fragile, according to a survey released today by Capital One Bank.

The quarterly Market Pulse survey found that 52 percent of Texas large businesses and 35 percent of small businesses reported that economic conditions are improving for their companies. Those results marked a 12-point drop for small businesses and a five-point decline for large businesses from second quarter.

?While we?ve seen a slight decline in business confidence and more businesses reporting drops in their financial performance, there is still an overall sense of strength and stability in the state?s economy,? said Kent Eastman, Texas State president for Capital One. ?Business plans for spending on investments remain on track, and we saw an increase in the number of businesses that are looking to hire right now and have plans to hire over the next six months. This is an encouraging sign.?

More than one-third of large and small companies plan to hire in the next six months, up from the second quarter.

That?s also reflected in Texas consumers, who are more optimistic about the job market than they?ve been in two years, the report found. Twenty percent said jobs are ?easy to find.?

Small businesses appear to be having a harder time than large businesses.

While the 36 percent of Texas small businesses planning to hire in the next six months is higher than the national average of 27 percent, the financial position of small firms is slightly worse than the national average and worse than larger companies.

Twenty-seven percent of small firms across Texas said their financial position was worse than last year, a 17-point increase from second quarter. That compares with 53 percent of large businesses that reported a better financial performance than last year. Small businesses said their biggest challenges are cash flow, price margins, customer payments and increased competition.

Texas consumer confidence in personal finances and business conditions rose from last year.

While 49 percent of Texas consumers say local business conditions are excellent or good, only 12 percent say that the local economy is excellent.

Just over one-third of consumers said that their personal financial position is better than a year ago, which dropped slightly from the second quarter. But 16 percent say their financial position is ?much better,? which is significantly higher than previous quarter.

Capital One surveyed by telephone 402 adults and 300 business owners or managers in Texas in September and early October.

Charles Krauthammer Fiscal Cliff Analogy: Obama Offer Worse Than Appomattox

Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer drew a curious comparison on Fox News Thursday evening between Washington's fiscal cliff standoff and the Civil War.

During a panel appearance on "Special Report" with Bret Baier, Krauthammer compared the White House's opening proposal in the fiscal cliff negotiations to the surrender terms offered General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House to conclude the Civil War.

Said Krauthammer:

It's not just a bad deal, this is really an insulting deal... Robert E. Lee was offered easier terms at Appomattox and he lost the Civil War. The Democrats won by 3% of the vote and they did not hold the House. Republicans won the House. So this is not exactly unconditional surrender, but that's what the administration is asking of Republicans.

There not only are no cuts in this, there's an increase in new spending with a stimulus - this is almost unheard of. I mean, what do they expect? They obviously expect the Republicans will cave on everything. I think Republican ought to simply walk away.

The actual offer, as explained by the Huffington Post's Ryan Grim, is as follows:

The proposal is based on a two-step plan that would decouple the high-end tax and capital gains rates from the middle-class rates, extending only those for the middle class. It would revert estate taxes to their higher 2009 level, and raise an additional $600 billion in taxes elsewhere, according to the GOP summary. It then proposes tax reform required to raise at least as much as the tax hikes, and entitlement reform that would trim $400 billion from the programs.

Members of Congress and the White House are currently engaged in the first stages of negotiations to avoid a combination of tax increases and spending cuts -- the former through the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, and the latter as mandated by last summer's debt ceiling deal -- that would take effect at the end of 2012.

November e-Newsletter ? the energy bill, mystery shopping at High ...

In this edition:

? The energy bill
? Are you being served?
? Charter for regulators
? Rolling-out smart metering reports
? Civil society and the market place

Energy bill

The Government has published its?Energy Bill in Parliament today (29 November). To make sure the Energy Bill delivers change in a fair and cost effective way for consumers, Consumer Focus is calling for:

Are you being served?

This week we published the latest edition of our rolling programme of mystery shopping research, looking at queue times, quality of service and accessibility of the larger, busier Post Office branches found on our high streets ? Crown branches, franchised branches and WH Smith branches.

The research has revealed a mixed picture for consumers. There is good news on accessibility, significantly shorter queues and investment in flagship Crown branches. However, the research also reveals concerns about the quality and accuracy of counter staff knowledge, with researchers sometimes sold a more expensive product than they needed.

The research, carried for our report ? Are You Being Served? ? was designed to test the quality of a customers? experience when visiting High Street branches. This includes Crown branches, franchised branches and a further 70 branches managed by WH Smith. The report was published this week.

We?ve also published a report looking at consumers? knowledge of Royal Mail?s products. Getting the most from the post? looks at how well consumers understand the main Royal Mail products and whether they use they the right ones.

Charter for regulators

A coalition of leading consumer organisations is urging Chairs of Parliamentary Select Committees to use its new Consumer Charter to hold the UK?s regulatory bodies to account for their performance in protecting consumers.

The Consumer Charter for Regulators is a statement of what consumers should reasonably expect any regulator to deliver. Select Committees play a vital public interest role in monitoring the performance of regulators, but they currently lack a simple framework to help them check whether these bodies are achieving the objectives set for them by Parliament.

The move follows a National Consumer Federation Consumer Congress Workshop in March 2012, sponsored by Consumer Focus, entitled Are Regulators failing the consumer? and new research by Which? highlighting a lack of public confidence in how key professions are regulated. Just one in 10 people consider that bankers are regulated effectively, while none of the professions were considered to be well regulated by more than half of those surveyed.

The charter was launched on Tuesday 27 November at the House of Commons at the All Party Parliamentary Group for Consumer Affairs and Trading Standards, chaired by Austin Mitchell MP.

Rolling-out smart metering reports

In-home energy display guidance and report launch
On Wednesday 21 November, we launched our In-home Display (IHD) industry good practice guidance and report Making energy use visible ? Smart meter in-home display usability research with consumers together with our advice guide for customers to help them select an energy display.

IHDs will be provided to all homes in Great Britain that have a smart meter installed, and will have the capability of displaying near real-time data on their energy consumption.
The research was designed to help us understand the extent to which IHDs are usable. It entailed user testing a range of IHDs with a diverse group of consumers, including older and disabled people. The industry-facing guidance was created to support IHD design inclusivity, including specific features and characteristics that should be considered as a minimum.

The launch was chaired by Consumer Focus Director of Policy and External Affairs, Adam Scorer, with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) presenting the latest policy context around IHDs including requirements on usability. Zoe McLeod, Head of Smart & Sustainable Energy Markets at Consumer Focus, presented the key findings from the report together with the research company, Ricability. The launch event was attended by IHD manufacturers, DECC, Ofgem, energy suppliers, relevant charities and other consumer groups.

Smart for All
Also on the 21 November, we launched our joint report with DECC and National Energy Action (NEA) Smart for All ? Understanding consumer vulnerability during the experience of smart meter installation at the All Party Fuel Poverty and Energy Efficiency Group?s Annual General Meeting.

The meeting was co-chaired by Caroline Lucas MP (Green Party), Rebecca Harris MP (Conservative) and Kelvin Hopkins MP (Labour).

  • DECC outlined the Smart Meter Roll-out Consumer Engagement Strategy
  • NEA presented the key report findings
  • E.ON presented on its vulnerable customer journey
  • Zoe McLeod outlined Consumer Focus?s key asks for Government and industry to ensure low income and consumers in vulnerable situations also benefit from the roll-out of smart meters

Key asks to ensure smart for all:

  • Accurate bills and an end to back billing
  • Offer functions to help customers budget, especially an accurate account balance on the IHD
  • Make smart prepay work and make it a higher priority
  • Make technology user-friendly
  • Ensure fast and easy switching
  • Make smart tariffs work for consumers
  • Ensure roll-out is affordable and offers value for money for all
  • Deliver an Extra Help Scheme for people in fuel poverty and vulnerable situations

Zoe?s presentation to the Group with more detail on our key asks: Smart for All ? Delivering benefits to low income and vulnerable consumers

Civil society and the market place

Consumer Focus and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) have joined forces to bring together a number of organisations who offer a range of services and/or products to consumers, whether it is insurance for older people, loans at affordable rates or energy on a not-for-profit basis, for a free half-day conference.
In the current economic and policy environment, this has become more topical than ever and more civil society organisations are generating income through trading.?However, this is not just about income generation. Some organisations are deliberately challenging the markets to make them more inclusive and beneficial to those in vulnerable positions.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Angela Knight, Chief Executive of Energy UK
  • Phil Levermore, Managing Director of Ebico
  • Mark Lyonette, Chief Executive of the Association of British Credit Unions
  • Nigel Mason, Business Development Manager at Co-operative Energy
  • Benita Matofska, Founder of The People Who Share
  • Ed Mayo, Secretary General of Co-operatives UK
  • Tess Pendle, Head of My Home Finance
  • Jennifer Smith, Head of Operations at The Plunkett Foundation
  • Jane Vass, Head of Public Policy at Age UK?

When: The conference will start at 09:00 on Thursday 6 December 2012 and is due to finish at 13:15.
Where: Friends House, 173 Euston Road, London, NW12BJ Book online

Coming soon

We?ll be publishing reports on internet traffic management, price comparison websites and an examination of consumers? willingness to pay for energy efficiency and carbon reduction initiatives.

Dogs in Florence ? Flo'N The Go

By Margaret Suren (Kent State University)

Dogs have been man?s best friend since the cavemen. They used them to hunt and protect themselves. Now we keep pets to keep ourselves company. Few people in the world still use dogs to their breeding use, some have even gotten twisted. Of that few, the dogs are used for such as agility and beauty competitions.? Bottom line is that we love our dogs. Big, small, pretty, and ugly, the dog as become part of the family. But is there a difference between the American family dog and the Italian?

Based off of my observations of living in Florence, Italy for almost three months now, I?ve notice that the canine pet is more welcomed every where.? If someone was walking their dog down the street and wanted to grab a caffe, they didn?t have to tie their dog outside to go in. On more than one occasion I?ve walked into a store and found a small dog sleeping behind the counter.? On my way to school, I pass a jewelry shop and every morning there is a small black dog watching me as I walk by.

I have only seen a few shops with the sign posted on the door that reads ?No Dogs Allowed,? but I feel like they only appear on the big name shops like Coin and H&M or at grocery stores where an obvious health risk is present.

In America there are few stores that let you take a dog inside and those are 95% pet shops. Every where you see the symbol of ?No Pets Allowed.?? They even have restrictions on what type of pet you can have in your own house.? In my home town, anything over 100 pounds or a bull terrier such as a pit bull, was against the law of the city.

This isn?t to apply that the American people don?t love there dogs. In fact the American dream is probably 2.5 kids and a pet dog with a white picket fenced in yard.? We have multiple of animal organizations, some just dedicated to saving dogs from abusive owners. Some are for rescuing certain breeds from over breeding or extinction. Further investigation is needed to learn about what kind of rescue organizations Italy has.

Also before moving here, I was expecting to see only a certain kind of dog breed.? I thought Italians might only have the small, lap dogs like Italian Greyhounds or Yorkshire terriers. But I have seen a wide variety of them. I have seen the small ones but I have also seen dogs as big as Labradors. In Venice I saw two Birmese Mountain dogs.? Big sized dogs were not what I assumed I might see here in Florence but by observing the community I soon learned that it was just a misconception.

It might be just a culture shock for me because I?ve always lived in a small town. Moving to Florence, I knew I was going to see different things but I wasn?t expecting to see any pet differences.? My observations could also be wrong, maybe it is the same here in Italy as it is in America. Maybe if I had visited a big city such as New York, I would?ve seen similar behavior.

Growing up, I?ve never been without a dog. Even when I went to college I saw my two every other weekend. Since moving here, it has been the longest I?ve ever gone without some sort of pet. When I plan for the future,? I always add in a dog because I automatically assume I?ll have one. It has become such a norm for me to be with one that I will FaceTime my mother just so I can say hi to my puppies. I might miss them more than my actual family.? I am soon learning that man?s best friend is celebrated and loved? everywhere.

Scorecard : India v England, 2nd test, Mumbai : 22-26 Nov 2012.

Scorecard : India v England, 2nd test, Mumbai : 22-26 Nov 2012.

Match : India v Sri Lanka, 2nd of 4 test match series on England's tour of India 2012-13.
Venue/Date : Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, 22,23,24,25 & 26 November 2012.
Debut : none.
Toss : India, elected to bat.
Result : England won by 10 wickets and now series is locked 1-1 with 2 more tests to go.
India won 1st test by 9 wkts.
Man of the match : Kevin Pietersen.
Umpires : Aleem Dar (Pakistan) + Tony Hill (New Zealand) with S Ravi (3rd umpire, from India).

Head to head
105th India v England test match it was and now, England lead 39 to 20 besides 46 draws. In India, two teams clashed for the 53rd time and visitors recorded their 12th win but home team still leads at 15 with 26 draws. At the venue, Wankhede in Mumbai, both teams now have won 3 each with 1 draw.

End of day 1 : Ind 1st inn = 266/6 (Pujara 114* + Ashwin 60*)
Yet another toss landed against England side (if match referee Roshan Mahanama is to be believed) but they didn't bowl as bad this time. James Anderson drew first blood off second ball and then Monty Panesar, finally given a chance, ravaged through Indian middle order. Chesteshwar Pujara and R Ashwin provided some respectability to the score with an unbroken 94 run stand. Pujara completed back to back centuries.

End of day 2 : End 1st inn = 178/2 in 65 ovs (Cook 87* + Pieterse 62*)
England made significant comeback into the match, or may have even moved a bit forward, thanks to Alastair Cook who's proving un-dismissable for home team but real faith was installed by Kevin Pietersen who counter attacked spinners in helpful conditions admirably.

End of day 3 : End 1st inn = 178/2 in 65 ovs (Cook 87* + Pieterse 62*)
The best day for visitors on this tour. First, Kevin Pietersen teared Indian bowling apart and then Monty Panesar raced to his second five wicket haul of the match. Indians couldn't find anyone to lift them up, apart from Pragyan Ojha who made crucial breakthroughs and then Gautam Gambhir who, under pressure, held one fort alone.

End of day 4 : End of the match
No miracle happened. England bowlers got through next three wickets without conceding much and then openers finished the match together. Memorable win for visitors this.

Greek FinMin: Debt buyback program 'must work'

Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras says a program whereby the country will buy back some of its bonds from private investors "must work" if the country's excessive debt load is to be reduced.

The bond buyback is part of measures agreed on with European finance ministers earlier this week, including the release of 44 billion euros ($57 billion) in critical rescue loans.

Stournaras did not give details of the buyback scheme, for which he said funding to the tune of 13-14 billion euros has been assured. This would be on top of the loan payment. Greeces debt management agency is to give details next week.

While stressing that the program must work, the minister also said there ?is a Plan B,? for which he would not give details. [AP]

Windows 8 Sells 40 Million Licenses in First Month

The numbers are in for the first month of the Windows 8 operating system and things are looking not too shabby for the Microsoft venture despite assertions stating otherwise. According to reports, some 40 million licenses were sold in the first month, meaning that it?s outpacing Windows 7 in terms of upgrades.

Of course, Windows 7 moved 60 million copies in its first 10 weeks. An estimated 40 million licenses of that were sold in the first month, too, so the numbers certainly appear to be quite comparable if not exactly the same. It?ll depend on how Windows 8 continues to pace itself.

A lot of the discussion has?centred?on the issue of cost. The Windows 8 upgrades are much cheaper than the transition to Windows 7. Microsoft is currently selling upgrades to 8 in the range of $39.99, depending on market locale, and that could mean that some users are purchasing the upgrade but not installing it yet.

Many are presumably just fine with how Windows 7 has been doing and have no intentions of moving on to Windows 8, but they?ve taken the relatively affordable Windows 8 as a sort of failsafe in case things start to roll in the direction of the newer operating system.

Offering Windows 8 at such an inexpensive price could very well harm Microsoft?s bottom line, at least when it comes to overall revenue, and it certainly won?t compete on grounds of cash alone with the likes of Apple. Some have even taken to calling Windows users ?cheapskates,? based in part at least on the idea that so many apps in the Windows 8 Store are free. Nothing like a little dumb rivalry.

This could turn out well for Microsoft in the end, but it could also spell disaster in a land where revenue is king. The company may be able to convert a good number of people to its Windows 8 operating system after wearing them down for a while, but if many potential users are buying in when the prices are low Microsoft might have trouble gathering more cash.

In contrast, Apple sold 40 million iPads in all of 2011. OS X has about 66 million users in total. From this, it?s fair to conclude that reports of the death of the PC market have been greatly exaggerated ? at least for now.

North Korea joke slips over China's Great Firewall

How did a spoof article about North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un being the sexiest man alive end up as a real news item in China? Turns out it was a case of telephone, or Chinese whispers, in the digital age.

Hong Kong media picked up the piece by U.S. satirical website The Onion a week ago while explaining to readers in Chinese that it was a farce. But from there, it jumped over the Great Firewall and landed into the official, irony-free Chinese media.

When Hong Kong's Phoenix TV website, ifeng.com, ran its story on its fashion channel on Nov. 21, the story's second paragraph clearly stated: "The Onion is a satirical news organization."

But, when state-run Yangtse.com picked up the Phoenix piece a few hours later, it had morphed into straight news. The piece never mentioned that the original was a joke, instead plucking comical reader comments attached to the Phoenix story and running those.

"A man with so much fat on the face, and the double chin, and the excessively white skin. And they call him the sexiest. They do deserve the name Onion. I can't help but shed sad tears."

The editor cited for the story, Yang Fang, could not immediately be reached - and two employees who answered the phone at the Nanjing media outlet said Wednesday they weren't even sure if Yang still worked there.

Five days after the Yangste piece, Beijing's Guangming Daily website took the story for a spin, trimming its length and citing Yangtse.com as its source. The Guangming piece was still online Wednesday and the story's editor told The Associated Press that she had not realized it was a joke until the AP called.

The editor, Wang Miaomiao, said she wasn't worried about the gaffe.

"Even if it was satire, the report itself was true. The content is not made up. Also, we have to go through a procedure to take something down from the website," Wang said. "In addition, it is not a fabricated report, and it does not jeopardize society."

The story next made it to the flagship paper of the Communist Party, the People's Daily, on Tuesday along with a significant upgrade: a 55-photo slideshow of Kim. An editor at the People's Daily website who refused to give his name said the story was picked up from the Guangming Daily site, running on three channels in Chinese and English.

Upon realizing it was a spoof, the People's Daily decided to take down their versions on Wednesday. But not before The Onion updated their original piece with a link to the People's Daily and a shout-out: "For more coverage on The Onion's Sexiest Man Alive 2012, Kim Jong-Un, please visit our friends at the People's Daily in China, a proud Communist subsidiary of The Onion, Inc."

"Exemplary reportage, comrades," The Onion wrote.

It is not the first time China's heavily censored media have fallen for a fictional report by the just-for-laughs The Onion.

In 2002, the Beijing Evening News, one of the capital's biggest tabloids at the time, published as news the fictional account that the U.S. Congress wanted a new building and that it might leave Washington. The Onion article was a spoof of the way sports teams threaten to leave cities in order to get new stadiums.

Jeremy Goldkorn, director of Danwei.com, a firm that researches Chinese media and Internet, said that one of the peculiarities of the Chinese news business is that stories can be freely shared by any other media outlet in their entirety, or edited, as long as the original source is credited somewhere on the page.

"It does mean that stuff gets circulated a lot more widely because you don't have intellectual property restrictions on articles that you would in the U.S. for example," he said. "So when you mix that up with this culture of no fact-checking and not really having a news editor whose main job is seeking truth, then what you get is The Onion being taken seriously in the People's Daily."

24 Tenn. courthouses receive bomb threats

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? Bomb threats forced the evacuation of 24 courthouses across Tennessee Tuesday morning, including the federal building in Memphis, but authorities who are investigating said no devices were found.

Tennessee became the fourth state to deal with similar bomb hoaxes. One targeted 28 courthouses in Oregon and similar threats were reported in Nebraska and Washington this month.

Seven threats were in West Tennessee, four in Middle Tennessee and 13 in East Tennessee, said state Emergency Management Agency spokesman Jeremy Heidt. No bombs have been found.

Dalya Qualls, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, said no arrests have been made and the agency is assisting local law enforcement to investigate.

Heidt said the threats were made by telephone to court clerk offices. "It's been going on all morning," said Heidt.

The federal building in Memphis houses the federal court and offices for the Department of Justice, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen. It was cleared around 9 a.m. for a couple of hours while authorities checked it.

Police temporarily blocked a trolley line that ran by the federal building in Memphis and brought in a dog to search the building before letting people return around 11 a.m.

The West Tennessee counties that received threats were Carroll, Crockett, Decatur, Hardeman, Hardin, Chester and Shelby. The Middle Tennessee counties affected were Cheatham, Clay, Franklin and Giles. The East Tennessee counties that received threats were Anderson, Bledsoe, Blount, Campbell, Carter, Claiborne, Cumberland, Fentress, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hamilton and Hancock.

Thyroid problems linked to irregular heart rhythm

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? People with an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) carry a greater risk of developing irregular heart rhythm (known as atrial fibrillation) than those with normal thyroid function, finds a study published on bmj.com today.

As such, the researchers suggest there should be an increased focus on atrial fibrillation in patients with raised thyroid function.

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland makes too much thyroxine (thyroid hormone), causing many of the body's functions to speed up. About 1 in 100 women and 1 in 1,000 men develop hyperthyroidism at some stage of their life and it can happen at any age.

It is well known that overt hyperthyroidism is associated with atrial fibrillation, but it's still not clear whether milder (subclinical) hyperthyroidism has a similar effect. Data on the risk of atrial fibrillation in patients with an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is also limited.

So a team of researchers in Denmark set out to examine the risk of atrial fibrillation in relation to the whole spectrum of thyroid disease in a large group of patients.

Using nationwide registries, they identified 586,460 patients who had consulted a general practitioner in Copenhagen from 2000 to 2010 and had a thyroid function blood test. This measures the amount of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) circulating in the blood. In people with hyperthyroidism the level of TSH will usually be low, whereas in people with hypothyroidism the level of TSH will usually be high.

During an average five and a half years follow-up, 17,154 (3%) of patients had a diagnosis of a first atrial fibrillation, 53% of whom were women.

Compared to patients with normal thyroid function, the risk of atrial fibrillation increased with decreasing levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone. For example, patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism had a 30% increased risk of atrial fibrillation, while patients with high-normal thyroid function had a 12% increased risk.

In contrast, hypothyroidism was associated with a lower risk of atrial fibrillation.

The authors stress that, although atrial fibrillation was closely associated with thyroid activity, they cannot prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. However, they say their study is "the first to assess the association between the whole spectrum of thyroid disease and the subsequent risk of atrial fibrillation in a population of primary care patients."

They conclude: "These results support long term screening for atrial fibrillation in patients with thyroid disease."

Modern technology allows users to take charge of their health ...

By: Kendall Ho

VANCOUVER ? A 2010 Statistics Canada survey found 64 out of 100 Canadians age 16 years or older searched the Internet for medical and health related information. Usage in United States is even higher; a 2011 survey found eight out of 10 Americans go online for health and medical reasons. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently estimated 17,828 health and fitness apps and 14,558 medical apps are currently available for mobile phones. These statistics illustrate how modern electronic technologies such as smart phones and tablets, coupled with social media and the Internet, are rapidly changing how the general public is seeking health information and services.

EHealth ? the use of modern electronic technologies to access health information and services ? has clearly shown health benefits. For example, citizens living in rural and remote parts of our province and country can consult nurses, doctors, or specialists online if they are not in the same communities where they live. People use text messaging to quit smoking or remind them to take medications. Family members use video conferencing to virtually visit their loved ones being treated in hospitals miles away from their own communities. High school students program smartphone apps to help detect falls of the elderly and automatically email or text for help if necessary.

These are but a few innovative examples of how eHealth can help us take care of ourselves and receive health services online. However, eHealth is still far from being a routine part of our health system. While we now regularly use the Internet and our mobile phones for banking, travel, or accessing government services, how many of us can make doctors or hospital appointments, find our own test results, or talk to health professionals about our health concerns online, safely and securely? Surveys on eHealth point to these types of activities as those many would like to have but don?t regularly yet. How long will it take before we can count on these and other eHealth innovations being available for us to use routinely, safely, and in a cost-effective way?

Thanks to governments, hospitals, health professionals and technology companies, eHealth is making progress. For example, Canada Health Infoway, the federal government-funded organization charged with ensuring Canadians have access to secure and useful electronic health records, has been actively working with all the provinces and territories to set national eHealth standards, and raise awareness of eHealth with the general public. Provincial governments and health authorities are investing in technology infrastructures and setting policies to guide the implementation of eHealth. Educational organizations such as the UBC Faculty of Medicine are helping health professionals to learn more about eHealth and use it in practice with their patients. Active research is also happening to refine existing ways and imagine new approaches to use modern technologies for health and treatment improvement for our citizens.

Meanwhile, what can you do to bring eHealth benefits to yourself and your loved ones? I would suggest four immediate steps for you to get involved:

1. Commit to be an active health consumer: Take an active interest in your own health and go online to find information that is of interest and can be useful to you. For example, try to find at least one app to start thinking about how you can use it to help you achieve wellness and better health. Go to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or social media sites to look for information and participate in discussions. Lots of health information is out there waiting for you to discover.

2. Get to know the new technologies and use them for health: Knowing where treasures are buried, we need to have tools to dig them out. Learn to use social media, SMS and smart-phone apps and use these skills to search for health information that is relevant to you and your loved ones.

3. Think of eHealth ways to help you help yourself: Just imagine for a minute, what do you need right now to improve your health? Exercising more? Losing a few pounds? Knowing how your blood pressure and heart rate are doing or how well you are sleeping at night? Once you have an idea, check out if ?there?s an app for that.? Very likely you will find someone else has already thought of it and developed something for you to use. If there isn?t, you may have uncovered a super idea that is worth exploring further with others.

4. Work with your health professionals to ensure safety and accuracy: While valuable health resources can be found online, you need to make sure they are accurate and suitable for you. Make sure you determine with your own doctor, nurse, pharmacist, or trusted health professional first if the information is helpful or harmful to you, especially if it involves taking pills or supplements, or doing unusual or even extreme activities.

In Canada, we are blessed with excellent electronic infrastructure and technologies for us to stay connected, and a great health system to support our health. Current and future developments in eHealth require partnerships and participation of policy-makers, health professionals, industry and citizens like yourselves who are familiar with and want to use eHealth.

When it comes to getting to know eHealth, think of Steve Jobs? two famous mottoes: ?Stay hungry, stay foolish.? Hungry for health information and apps that can help you live healthier lives and manage your illnesses better; foolish to keep asking questions and learning about your own body in partnership with your health professionals. And, ?Think different.? Keep thinking how can eHealth help me achieve better health?

Three new arthropod species have been found in the Maestrazgo Caves in Teruel

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A team of scientists from the University of Navarra and the Catalan Association of Biospeleology have discovered three new collembolan species in the Maestrazgo caves in Teruel, Spain. Their description has been published in the Zootaxa journal. These minute animals belong to one of the most ancient animal species on the planet.

The Maestrazgo caves in Teruel are located in a region of the Iberian Range where fauna has not been the subject of much study. It is a very isolated region since its average altitude is between 1,550 m and 2,000 m asl and its climate can be described as "almost extreme" experiencing temperatures of between -40?C and -25?C. Inside the caves, however, the temperatures remain constant at between 5?C and 11?C.

"Studying fauna in the caves allows us to expand on our knowledge of biodiversity. In the case of the three new collembolan species that we have found in Teruel, they are organisms that have survived totally isolated for thousands of years. Having 'relatives' on the surface means they act like relics from the past that have survived the climate change taken place on the outside of the caves," as explained by Enrique Baquero, who carried out a taxonomic study along with Rafael Jordana, both of whom are from the University of Navarra.

For these scientists it is vital to study how new species found adapt to the cave environments. "Like other cave-adapted animals, the collembolans require greater chemical sensitivity as they cannot use their sight in the absence of light," explains Baquero.

These animals are arthropods from the hexapod group (meaning six legs), a parallel group to insects. However, they are different and more primitive, showing absence of wings, different structure of their mouth, presence of the ventral organ and frequently, presence of the springing organ named the furca (an uneven abdomen appendix used to jump far away from danger).

Field work in extreme conditions

The three new species of collembolan documented in the investigation published in the Zootaxa journal belong to very different groups and are phylogenetically separate from one another. They have been named Pygmarrhopalites maestrazgoensis, P. cantavetulae and Oncopodura fadriquei. The researchers have also found specimens of five other species in the caves that have already been documented in nearby and further away caves.

These animals were found by a team of speleologists headed by Floren Fadrique from the Catalan Association of Biospeleology. They entered different caves in harsh conditions of cold, humidity and darkness.

The expert concludes that "the animals were captured by laying down traps. These consisted of jars containing different liquids, which the animals approached in search of food. They were then trapped until the speleologists returned to collect them. Professor Jordana and I received the samples collected by the speleologists and proceeded to their identification."

Canada's Carney named as Bank of England chief

LONDON/OTTAWA (Reuters) - Britain named Canadian central bank chief Mark Carney on Monday to head the Bank of England, springing the surprise choice of a foreigner to push reform of its troubled financial system.

A former Goldman Sachs investment banker who at the Bank of Canada guided the Canadian economy through the global economic crisis, Carney will succeed Mervyn King who retires in July.

Carney, who already plays a leading role in setting global banking rules, defended his departure from Canada and signaled that bigger problems awaited him in London.

"I'm going to where the challenges are greatest," he told an Ottawa news conference, stressing the need to "rebalance" the economy which has relied heavily on a financial services sector hit by huge losses and scandals.

"It's very important for the global economy that the UK does well, that it succeeds in this rebalancing of their economy, that the reform of the British financial system is completed," he said.

Carney will become the first non-British head of the central bank in its 300-year history, beating hot favorite BoE deputy governor Paul Tucker to the post, which will pay a salary of 624,000 pounds ($1 million). The Bank of Canada does not disclose Carney's exact salary but says he is paid in a range equivalent to US$436,200-$513,000.

During the crisis, Carney helped to make Canada's recession one of the shallowest of the world's richest nations. No Canadian bank needed government help, and the country recovered all the jobs it lost in the downturn relatively rapidly.

By contrast, Britain had to bail out Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group, and the world's sixth-largest economy is still struggling to achieve growth four years after the crisis broke.

Carney, 47, will remain as head of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), a Basel-based body that sets global banking rules, when he moves to London next year, although the Bank of Canada itself does not regulate the country's banks.

"I believe he will bring the strong leadership and external experience that the Bank (of England) itself needs as it takes on its heavy new responsibilities for regulating our banking system," Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, the finance minister, told parliament in announcing the appointment.

Carney will stay at the Bank of Canada through May, and starts at the Bank of England in July. He will serve a five-year term, rather than the eight years that had been expected for the next BoE governor.

From next year the BoE will take charge of British financial regulation, almost doubling its size. This boosted the case for a governor with strong management skills and financial market experience, rather than someone in King's academic mould.

Carney's past as a Goldman Sachs investment banker has been a double-edged sword, as he fought to prove his loyalties lie with ordinary citizens, not his high-flying banker ex-colleagues. He clashed memorably last year with JPMorgan Chase & Co Chief Executive Jamie Dimon in Washington, when the U.S. banker argued against new regulations for the financial sector.

DEAD MONEY

Carney also courted controversy in August when he accused Canadian firms of sitting on piles of "dead money", rather than investing it. Large British companies also have money to invest, but little appetite to do so at a time of strong economic risks.

How Carney's monetary policy experience will translate to Britain is less clear. Although the Bank of Canada has raised interest rates, unlike the BoE, economists said this reflected Canada's strong economy rather than a bias on Carney's part.

"Pragmatic is how I'd describe him," said Derek Burleton, an economist at Toronto-Dominion Bank. "He doesn't come across as an ideologue one way or the other."

Under King, the BoE has poured 375 billion pounds into the economy by buying government bonds. The Bank of Canada has not used this policy of "quantitative easing" largely because its economy never weakened enough to warrant it.

Until now, Carney had strongly played down the possibility of heading the British central bank. "(It's a) surprise, huge surprise," said Peter Dixon, an economist with Commerzbank. "That was the one guy I didn't have in the running.

Carney said he did not apply for his new job as part of the formal process, and discussions intensified only in the last two weeks.

He has already spent a decade in Britain as a postgraduate student at Oxford and at Goldman Sachs - where European Central Bank President Marin Draghi also once worked. Carney, whose wife is British, will apply for citizenship, Osborne said.

Carney pointed to the steady state of Canadian banks, which also contrasts to some of those in Britain that have been sucked into scandals over rigging the Libor interest rate and mis-selling financial products to people who didn't need them.

"We have a system that works very well. It's been tested under the biggest economic shock and financial shock that any of us will ever see in our lifetime, and it has passed that test," he said.

His job has been helped in recent years by booming prices for Canada's commodities exports from oil to gold and grain.

The still-athletic Carney - a sub-four-hour marathon runner - was once described as "un-Canadian" by one Ottawa official because of his sometimes confrontational style.

Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty expressed the mixed feelings in Ottawa about Carney's departure. "It's bitter-sweet. It's our loss. His loss will be felt," he said.

The foreign exchange market passed a similar judgment with sterling rising against both the U.S. and Canadian dollars. The pound hit to a 2-1/2 week high against the Canadian dollar to C$1.5950 from C$1.5898 beforehand.

7 Public Speaking Social Media Strategies - Speak & Deliver

Is Facebook Public Speaking? How about Twitter, Linked In, and all the other Social Media platforms that exist today?

The logical answer would be 'NO' - it's not verbal, its written, right? What we read doesn't have the same effect on us as what we hear, does it? How many of us would stand in front of an audience and read our statuses (particularly some of the political and religious ones) to a live audience? And I mean ALL of them?

So clearly, it's NOT public speaking.?

Or is it?

When you read a post, don't you hear that person's voice (or what you think that person sounds like, at least)? They aren't, typically, posting fiction or prose. Statuses and updates are almost always written in Active Voice - for a short blurt of an idea to a long, well-considered (or not) commentary on life. Even the jokes and placards of wisdom we share are essentially us sharing our voice with our followers.

When we reply or comment, surely that is nothing less than public speaking, right?

These social media platforms are very public, and who sees what we 'say' is not always as tightly controlled as we think, unless we have kept our friends lists very small, and our privacy settings completely locked down.

We see stories all the time of athletes, politicians, the Donald - saying something that gets them bad press, suspended, fined, or fired at their job, or even arrested. While most of us aren't going to face issues quite this harsh, as speakers, we still need to consider that anything we 'say' will be used to define us by those listening - no matter how well they may or may not know us, or we them.

7 Public Speaking Social Media Strategies

1. Know Your Audience. Just as you would for a speaking engagement, consider who your friends and followers are - and how they will perceive what you say. It isn't just your poker buddies who hear your statements that you're a die-hard Tea Partier or a flaming Liberal, or that you spend your life playing fantasy football - it's potentially EVERYONE you've connected with - including potential employers and meeting planners.?

2. Control Your Audience. Investigate privacy settings. Create smaller broadcast groups within your larger friendship base. Open a second account for just you and your poker buddies. My wife has one facebook account for 'everyone', with an emphasis on people with Neurofibromatosis, which is the cause she promotes, and a smaller account for closer, more personal friends. Don't let 'friends of friends' see your comments, unless you truly don't care who reads what you may subconsciously believe is only being read by your best buddy. Consider blocking people who regularly cause problems in your conversation streams - we're often judged by who we let be our friends, as well as by what we ourselves say.

Be aware of who you're friending or adding to your follow lists. Don't friend just anyone. Maybe you have 50 mutual friends, but how do you know one or two of them didn't just friend this nutball without thinking, and the next 48 trusted the judgment of the first two? Why are you adding people? Plan the audience you're building - are you just collecting baseball cards of your favorite people? Are you trying to connect with a specific audience? Are you stalking your old boyfriends? Its easier to control your audience when you know and own up to your intentions.

3. Think Before You Status. Would you say what you just typed in front of a crowd made up of everyone of your friends? It's easy to blurt something out in the moment in today's day and age, to type a knee-jerk reaction to life that we would never say aloud in a crowded room. Your facebook wall, your twitter account - they're a crowded room. Stop before you Send - consider the ramifications. Are you adding value, to both your reader and yourself? Be authentic, but be careful.

4. Think Before You Comment. When you comment on Facebook, you are speaking not only to that person, but ALL of THEIR friends as well. Is what you have to say pertinent? Does it add value? Or is it just snarky, argumentative, or plain dumb? Oh, our blurts sound good in the moment, but will they stand up to the scrutiny of being permanently posted for all to see - particularly a potentially unknown audience? Consider sending the person a message instead, or just letting that urge to comment pass. Take a cold shower instead.

5. Ask Questions Instead of Making Statements. By asking your audience what they think about something that you have a strong opinion about, you start a discussion while taking the edge off what might be an incendiary situation, and also get a chance to feel out who may be paying attention. When people read a blunt statement, it can come across as judgment. You may be making a sweeping statement to the universe, but it is read by each 'friend' individually, and some folks take things more personally than others.

6. Free Speech Isn't Free. It's your wall, your account, your life. Far be it from me to restrict free speech. But free speech comes at a cost - and it's up to you to decide if you're willing to pay the price of damaged friendships, misunderstandings, and potentially lost business. Angry at your local football team? Post about how stupid their owner is, and your chances of speaking to any part of that business plummets. Can't stand our President? You've just offended 51% of the voting public. Count the costs of your Free Speech.

7. Be True to Yourself - with Intention. In some cases, being opinionated and contrarian is part of who we are as speakers - Larry Winget and Alan Weiss are strong examples of people who make a living by not caring what people think about what they put out there. But they are also intentional about what they put out there. They keep it consistent with their desired audience values - and consciously trim those they offend out of their audience. If you only want to speak on Christian values, or the benefits of socialized healthcare, or the state of the economy, don't dilute your messaging, but be conscious of everything you say, to keep it on track with what you want to communicate.

Before the comments start rolling in - yes, I have violated many, if not all, of these rules over the years. Maybe even in the last week. How else do you think I've come up with them?

Social media is the most powerful communication tool created in the last decade, and potentially the most destructive. Your thoughts, your VOICE, is being broadcast to the largest audiences you'll ever reach. It doesn't discriminate as it spreads your messages to the masses - it's a megaphone in the mall, it's the megascreen in the Times Square of your social circles. Use it well. Do no harm. It IS public speaking - so be aware of what you Speak & Deliver.
