Richmond restaurants feast on honours at Chinese Restaurant Awards

Hungry diners in search of a quick barbecue meal found solace 11 years ago under one of Richmond?s biggest grocery stores. They?re still coming back today.

HK B.B.Q. Master, tucked away under Superstore on No. 3 Road, has again been recognized by the 2013 Chinese Restaurant Awards with a Best BBQ Shop prize. The restaurant has won the title in all five years the awards have existed, and is one of many Richmond eateries honoured this year.

Manager Eric Leung, 50, has been perfecting the art of Hong Kong-style barbecue pork, duck and ribs since he was a teenager.

?I try to do my best,? he shrugged, saying fresh meat, natural ingredients, service and offering a ?good deal? keep customers coming back.

The award is one of 18 Diners? Choice Awards that Metro Vancouver?s Chinese Restaurant Awards announced Monday. Eateries with Richmond locations captured 12 of 18 awards.

Tracy Lakeman, CEO of Tourism Richmond, said local Chinese cuisine makes Richmond stand out as a destination.

?What?s unique about Richmond?s Chinese restaurants is not only the authenticity of the food and dining experience, but also the influence that East meeting West makes on the cuisine,? she said. ?There is an access to fresh ingredients and seafood like no other and that is evident in the distinctive menu items that the chefs are developing.?

It was a record year for voting, as 34,273 ballots were cast over eight weeks.

Five new awards were added this year, including Best B.C. Dungeness Crab Dish, awarded to Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant, which has a location on No. 3 Road.

Winning the Best Pan-fried Shanghainese Bun was Ackroyd Road?s Top Shanghai Cuisine Restaurant, recognized for staying true to the original way of making the iconic delicacy. Another Richmond restaurant also captured one of the new awards?Mui Garden for Best Salt-and-Pepper Pork Loin.

Awards organizer Rae Kung said the goal is to provide diners with a comprehensive restaurant guide highlighting the best in local Chinese food. The awards are also aimed at inspiring excellence.

?We have the purpose of inspiring the chefs and restaurants to grow their creativity and profession for the dining public,? said Kung.

All winners will be invited to attend the awards ceremony Feb. 26 at River Rock Casino Resort, when the Critics? Choice Signature Dish Awards?approximately 25?will be announced.
