Ask Counselling ? Stress

Could you please outline some ways to manage anxiety/stress?

This is a common question amongst uni students, not surprising given the many demands you face! Stress is a normal part of life, but if there are too many stresses for our capacity to cope, then it becomes a negative experience.

Stress arises from many different factors, and affects us in many different ways, so there are a number of different strategies to reduce stress.

1. Look at what?s causing the stress ? what can be changed, reduced, removed and what can?t?
2. Look at how you react to stress and see if certain habits (smoking, drinking, and not sleeping) can be changed.
3. Look at how you think about stress (try to see it as something that will pass, that is normal, rather than over-emphasising it and worrying about the future).
4. Look after your physical health.
5. Look after yourself emotionally and socially (talk to supportive friends and family, have realistic goals, allowing yourself to be human and make mistakes.)

Other strategies, particularly for chronic stress and anxiety, involve changing habits in thinking and behaviour. Try to reduce negative thoughts and start practicing relaxation, meditation and exercise. If you have sleep difficulties, some help to restore a healthy sleep pattern will assist you to cope with and manage stress.
