Resistance Inc. | Barb Langlois

I wanted to say, ?Yeah well you can do that because you?re a guy.? You don?t have the family responsibilities that I have!?

Male-Female Issue

I really wanted to make it male-female issue.

I wanted to say ?Well I wish I could commit to accomplishing all those tasks in a day, but my schedule fluctuates around getting kids up and ready for school, picking them up from school and driving to after school events/activities AND of course helping with homework and who can forget making dinner. I work from home, in-between all of those things is the time I have to get my work done.?

That?s what I wanted to say to him.

Blame

I wanted to blame him . . . or at least someone or something other than me, for why I?m stuck at the halfway point of writing my book.

It?s not my fault I don?t have ?exceptional? habits, for not being able to get up and write at 0500 in the morning for 1 hour (like he does). I thought only farmers got up that early to work!

I wanted to make one of my ?sarcastic comments? to him ? like, like, oh brother, I can?t even think of one ? that just shows my state of exasperation!

So who is he?

Hugh Culver, a man I respect for the success he?s had in speaking, marketing and building his own ?Expert? business.

But this really doesn?t have anything to do with Hugh.

It has to do with Steven Pressfield.

Huh??

Habits . . . or lack of!

I was listening to one of Hugh?s teleseminars.? Hugh suggests changing your habits if they are not supporting you in achieving your goals.

So, one of my goals is to get my book finished.? Hugh says to be a successful writer (or to finish your book), you probably need to carve out a regular period of time in your day when you are committed to writing.? He says ?First thing in the morning is best before other tasks and events take over, because creative work almost always gets pushed to the back burner.?

Hugh gets up everyday at 0500 to write for an hour.

I can?t do that.? I already get up at 0550 to meditate for 20 minutes then I?m getting kids up etc.? I don?t have a specific period of time when I write, I write when ?I get to it,? (hmm, maybe that?s the problem, Barb!).

So after the teleseminar I was thinking of all the reasons why Hugh was wrong in encouraging me to ?change my writing habits.?

Have you ever done that ? tried to prove someone wrong when they hit a nerve of truth?

I was miffed.? I certainly couldn?t write after the teleseminar so I picked up a book I ordered from Amazon by Steven Pressfield called ?The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles.?? It had been sitting in the box from Amazon, for 2 weeks.

Resistance

Great!? Here?s what Pressfield says on one of the opening pages:

The following is a list in no particular order of those activities that most commonly elicit Resistance:

No. 1 = The pursuit of any calling in writing, painting, music, film, dance, or any creative art, however marginal or unconventional.

Ouch!! ?He nailed me on number 1.

Ok, Mr Smartypants Pressfield, so maybe I have Resistance.

Not wanting to do this alone, I?m willing to bet you also have Resistance.? It?s likely included in one of the other 10 activities he listed.

    I?ll share a couple more:

No. 5 = Any activity whose aim is tighter abdominals

No. 7 = Education of every kind.

No 8 = Any act of political, moral, or ethical courage, including the decision to change for the better some unworthy pattern of thought or conduct in ourselves.

    3 pages later, Pressfield says:

?Resistance seems to come from outside ourselves.? We locate it in spouses, jobs, bosses, kids, Hugh (Hugh was my own addition, in case you were wondering). . . . Resistance arises from within. ?It is self-generated and self perpetuated.? Resistance is the enemy within.?

    Who?s Joining Me?

But is it only me?? I don?t ever hear anyone else complaining about struggling to achieve their goals or dreams.? I know I said earlier that you also have Resistance but I didn?t really know for sure but then . . .

    Pressfield to the rescue . . .

?We?re wrong if we think we?re the only ones struggling with Resistance.? Everyone who has a body experience Resistance.? (p.13)

    Misery LOVES company!

So how about that, I wrote an article without talking to you but I found out something about you.? I confirmed You have Resistance, just like me!? (I think it?s called inter-breeding!)

    What?s yours about?

If you don?t know, I really encourage you to pick up Pressfields book ? it?s a quick easy read and he covers everything related to Resistance . . . unhappiness, self doubt, even sex ? yep you read that right.

No, I?m not quoting him on that section.

Oh and I wrote this article to get through my writing Resistance.

What are you doing to get through yours?
