How to bend it like Beckham: Physics students calculate perfect soccer ball kicking formula

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? Now that David Beckham won't be appearing at the London 2012 Olympics, other members of Team GB wanting to brush up on their free-kicks can rest easy.

University of Leicester physics students have published a paper which sets out the optimum way of kicking a football (soccer ball) in order to make it bend into the goal.

The ex-England captain's curling free-kicks became legendary, and even inspired the title of the 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham.

Now, four master's students at the University of Leicester's Department of Physics and Astronomy believe they have discovered a formula to explain how the football curves when a player puts spin on it.

Jasmine Sandhu, Amy Edgington, Matthew Grant and Naomi Rowe-Gurney found a relationship between the amount a football bends in the air, the speed it is travelling and the angular velocity -- or "spin" -- applied to the ball.

When a football spins in the air, it is subjected to a force called the Magnus force -- which causes it to curl sideways from the direction it was originally kicked.

The group found that the distance a ball bends (D) as a result of this force is related to the ball's radius (R), the density of air (?), the ball's angular velocity (?), it's velocity through the air (v), it's mass (m) and the distance travelled by the ball in the direction it was kicked (x).

For instance, if a player standing 15 metres away from the byline kicked an average football so that it was travelling at a velocity of 35 metres per second and had an angular velocity of 10 revolutions per second, the ball would bend around 5 metres towards the goal.

As a result, the player would probably need to bring a tape measure -- as well as a measure of their own abilities -- if they wanted to put the theory into practice during a game!

Jasmine Sandhu, 22, who studies Physics with Space Science and Technology, said: "Whilst researching new ideas for a paper I read about how physics influences various aspects of football, from the clothing they wear to the effects of playing at high altitude.

"The article discussed how a new design of ball, used in the 2010 World Cup, has three dimensional moulding of the panels in order to produce a more rounded ball, thus affecting the spin that can be imparted.

"This prompted us to examine how footballers use spin on the ball, and the factors which influence how much the path of the ball would bend.

"These findings made me more aware of how I can use spin to bend the ball in a game of football. In addition, this research is also relevant to other sports, such as tennis, which shows that physics definitely gives you the edge!"

The paper was published in this year's University of Leicester Journal of Special Physics Topics, which features original short papers written by students in the final year of their four-year Master of Physics degree.

Blueberry Smash Cocktail with Blueberries and St. Germain liqueur ...

Blueberry Smash Cocktail from Bon Appetit

by Creative Culinary on June 29, 2012 ? 6 comments

I spied this cocktail while thumbing through a recent issue of Bon Appetit magazine and it sounded perfect for summer with berries, citrus and St. Germain (San-Jer-Man), an all-natural elderflower liqueur produced in France. If you have not tried St. Germain, it?s a lovely liqueur (and that includes the bottle; it is gorgeous) that is made from processing fresh, handpicked blossoms of the elderflower found in the Alps. It has a wonderful floral nose with hits of pear, peach and grapefruit zest so it?s a great pairing with many fruits, champagne and in this case, vodka.

As often happens I knew when I saw the recipe I would love to make it but I had none of the ingredients available save for the liqueur so I anticipated it would happen at a later date. You know what happens with those don?t you? Too often they never happen; an article or idea will get filed away to only be forgotten.

Why was this cocktail so lucky? Call it providence that I received my bi-weekly box of produce from Door to Door Organics just a few days after reading the article. Even though I have the option to tailor what I get in my delivery; without fail I forget what I?ve ordered and it?s always a surprise when I open my box. It?s like a gift to myself each and every two weeks! This week included beets, watermelon, nectarines, blueberries, lemons and limes?it was meant to be don?t you think?

Not unlike a mojito, it requires a bit of smashing. If you don?t have a muddler then just use the end of a wooden spoon; the more flavor you can extract from the fruits the better. This cocktail was everything I had hoped for. It is simply summer. Berries, citrus and vodka combine with the St. Germain and create a cocktail that is perfectly balanced with a definite citrus edge. Not overly sweet, it?s just right!

Blueberry Smash

Perfect in the heat of summer; this cocktail is filled with fruit but is not an overly sweet cocktail; just overly good!

Ingredients

  • 2 lemons, sliced into rounds
  • 2 limes, sliced into rounds
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 cup (loosely packed) fresh mint leaves plus sprigs for garnish
  • 1 1/2 cups vodka
  • 3/4 cup St-Germain (elderflower liqueur)

Preparation

  1. Using a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon, coarsely mash lemon and lime slices, blueberries, and mint leaves in a large pitcher. Stir in vodka, St-Germain, and 2 cups of ice cubes.
  2. Divide drink among coupe or highball glasses; top with more ice cubes. Garnish each drink with a mint sprig.

"Three Spirits" Hotels by Filip Kurzewski

Three Spirits Filip Kurzewski

Project:?"Three Spirits" Hotels
Designed by?Filip Kurzewski

The futuristic concept of Three Spirits Hotel comes from designer Filip Kurzewski, discover more of his showstopping idea after the jump:

Three Spirits Filip KurzewskiThree Spirits Filip KurzewskiThree Spirits Filip KurzewskiThree Spirits Filip KurzewskiThree Spirits Filip KurzewskiThree Spirits Filip KurzewskiThree Spirits Filip KurzewskiThree Spirits Filip KurzewskiThree Spirits Filip KurzewskiThree Spirits Filip KurzewskiThree Spirits Filip Kurzewski

About the Project:

The design "Three Spirits" is thought as a floating tourist base in the form of the three ships ? hotels. Each of these three units is an independently functioning building. The vision of an assumption originated on the basis of personal numerous drawing and painting studies and the search of a form, space and a color.

The ships making up a complex ,to a certain degree, differ as for the applied program. If the appropriate localization is chosen, they may form the common assumption ? an island "Lang". Guests can then benefit from the broader scale of supplementary attractions. On the first ship they have a ballroom at their disposal, on the second one ? a casino and on the third one ? the hall of multifunctional purposes where, inter alia, film shows and theatrical performances are possible. When the ships "meet" they generate a common water area for guests to swim.
One of the main attractions of a particular ship is a diving capsule. Guests can not only practice scuba diving but also they can dive safely in significant depth to see ,for example coral reefs or wrecks. The set of boats is also delivered for guests, and it enables them to choose an appropriate place for recreation, among other things also for scuba diving during the stopover of the ship. Since each ship is a separate unit there is a possibility of temporary separation of the "vessels" ("vehicles") in order to carry out different cruises and afterwards a possibility of ships meeting again.

Each ship kept in a dissimilar interior style is a personification of one of the idols of Oceania and it has a possibility of simulation of its own "voice" and "thoughts", and also has the knowledge of the underwater land and also its own knowledge which it conveys.Guests can communicate with their guide throughout a knowledge hall ( "the heart" of each ship) to ask the questions. Depending on the host`s character they are also educated by means of whispers present on the shipboard.

We can go by boat "Lowalangi" which besides the full information of the "underwater land" informs us about natural calamities which may happen or they just happen in the area.
We can adopt "Aluluei" as our guide. Aluluei registers the moments of its earlier voyages. Guests who used to cruise with it can go back in their mind and recall their earlier adventure, or reconstruct the most fascinating moments of the host`s cruises. They have also an insight into far-reaching enterprises of the whole assumption. The third host is Tane which can also inform about the history (situation) of the habitat (environment) which guests can meet on the islands the ship sails round.

The three ships owing to their sculptural forms seen on the horizon are to evoke bona fides impression of the fairylike creatures which attracts the beauty. They will appear only in the superb sceneries and the most interesting diving places, changing their context all the time.

Wandering the horizons they can lead their guests through their own world, showing it to them and telling them about itself. The guests immerse themselves in the land of water and oceans, having the contact with water, they approach the underwater world in which during a longer stay the border seems to evanesce?

Brazil filling vacuum left by US in Latin America: analysts

With a booming economy, considerable mineral wealth and enhanced international prestige, Brazil has in recent years filled the power vacuum left by the United States in Latin America, experts say.

The presidents of the two dominant powers in the Western Hemisphere will meet next week, first in Washington and later in the Colombian city of Cartagena for the summit of the Americas.

When US President Barack Obama welcomes his Brazilian counterpart Dilma Rousseff at the White House next Monday, he will no doubt take the full measure of Brazil's increased clout in a region that Washington used to view as its own "backyard."

Now the world's sixth largest economy and a key member of the BRICS bloc of emerging powers (Brazil, China, India, Russia and South Africa), Brazil is pursuing a more pragmatic and less ideological agenda in the region, according to analysts.

Since former Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso convened the first South American summit in 2000, this country, which makes up half of South America in terms of GDP and population, has been financing major infrastructure projects such as the highway linking Brazil's Atlantic coast to Peru's Pacific ports.

"The interconnection of South American countries, the integration of trade, investment and infrastructure are priorities on Brazil's regional agenda," said former Brazilian foreign minister Luiz Felipe Lampreia.

In less than 10 years, Brazil's National Development Bank (BNDES) has increased sevenfold its regional loans for infrastructure projects.

The continent's physical integration will also be high on the agenda of the April 14-15 regional summit in Cartagena.

Like the Brazilians, the Chinese have also taken advantage of US neglect of the region to finance oil drilling and mining projects in Brazil, Colombia and Peru, as well as a railway in Colombia to link the Caribbean with the Pacific.

For most Latin American countries, the top trading partner today is not the United States but rather Brazil or China.

In 2009, China dislodged the United States as Brazil's biggest partner with bilateral trade reaching $77 billion last year, and Brazil enjoying a trade surplus of some $11.5 billion.

"There is a rivalry between Brazil and the United States for regional leadership. Rather than leadership, China is meanwhile seeking influence in the region through trade, exports and funding of infrastructure work," professor David Fleischer, of Brasilia University, told AFP.

Washington is also facing a greater degree of autonomy by the region, as evidenced by the creation of regional bodies such as the Union of South American Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, which group Latin American and Caribbean countries and leave out the United States.

"The weight of the United States in the region has considerably diminished. There is some bewilderment in the United States about a more assertive, more autonomous Latin America, which shows greater self-confidence and has more partners such as China," said Mauricio Santoro, an international relations expert at the Getulio Vargas Foundation, a prestigious think tank.

"Brazil has filled this vacuum, particularly in South America," he added.

Next Monday, Rousseff will return the visit Obama made to Brazil in March 2011.

The two countries are sticking to the cordial but a little distant relationship pursued under president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (2003-2010), although his successor, Rousseff, "is less ideological, more pragmatic," Rubens Barbosa, a former Brazilian ambassador to the United States, told AFP.

Barbosa said Washington, under Obama, is giving Brazil greater recognition.

"They listen more to Brazil, which could become a major oil supplier for the United States," he noted.

Another item on the agenda of Rousseff's White House talks will be the decision by the Pentagon in February to cancel a $355 million contract with US firm Sierra Nevada Corp. and Brazil's Embraer for 20 Embraer AT-29 Super Tucano aircraft.

The cancelation irritates the Brazilians and it could affect their decision on who should supply them with 36 multi-role combat aircraft, a contract valued at between $4 billion and $7 billion.

US aviation giant Boeing's F/A-18 Super Hornet is competing with the Rafale fighter, made by French firm Dassault Aviation, and Swedish manufacturer Saab's Gripen jet for the contract.

Rousseff is also keen to open the doors of the best US universities to more Brazilian students.

Next Tuesday, she will travel to Harvard University and the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology to discuss her "science without borders" program.

Under the scheme, Brazilians will be granted 100,000 scholarships to study in the best universities in the United States, Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and South Korea.
